Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 2TB 7200RPM SATA III 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02861Customer Review: Two-months so far so good, may run a little hot, performance seems fine Summary: 4 Stars
Installed approximately 2 months ago: imac g5 Mac OS X Tiger/10.4.11
One thing that is different about this Hitachi Deskstar compared to the other drives used in this particular imac is that the fans run almost all the time now, which was not occurring before; the cpu seems to run warmer too. That may not be related to the hard drive, but it is a change since installing this Hitachi.
Disk arbitration / responsiveness of this drive seems about as good as any I've utilized in this imac since upgrading from the original Maxtor 250 GB. I learned too late that the (disk arbitration) stalls (spinning pinwheels/sbbod) and sluggishness of the Seagate hard drives were precursors to their pending failure.
I'd had two 1TB Seagates in the past couple of years that totally failed within the first few months so I am a bit leery to yet proclaim this Hitachi Deskstar a winner just yet, especially after reading that recently a few others have had fails/DOAs on this exact drive too. If things go well for a more extended period of time, I'll revise my rating upward, but for now, it's 4.5 stars dependent upon future reliability & performance. I am however impressed enough that I am thinking of getting a newer 6gb/s 64mb-cache version 0F12115 (the reason I am only considering 2TB drives is because that is the maximum size that this non-intel PPC imac can handle).
To be honest in the 20ish years I've been using both pcs & macs, amid some others, the only drives that have NEVER failed me have been Maxtor hard drives which I've used in personal as well as for business, family & friends. I still have several Maxtors from the mid to late 90s that are operational in an older G3 and some PCs. (but my understanding is that Seagate now owns Maxtor and I rarely see them offered in hard drive search results FWIW.)
I am in total anti-Seagate mode at this point until I am convinced their quality control has improved and reliability restored for a long period of time. After reading many reviews here and elsewhere about Seagate drives, I remain unconvinced. My bricked/dead Seagate drives were from China and at the time there was a huge failure rate in those drives. Seagate still hasn't replaced mine and they have done nothing but give me the run around espeically about recovering the data. I say "Buyer Beware" to anyone thinking of buying a Seagate hard drive.
So far I've also had good luck with Western Digital (but I have not used those drives for anything but backups, not daily nor in constant use). Also, I will absolutely never buy anything from Iomega, that is one guarantee I can make from experiencing their early and extensive quality problems (remember the 1gb zip drive failure/clicking debacles?).
Anyway, if any problems rear their heads on this Hitachi Deskstar 3.5-Inch 2TB 7200RPM SATA II 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02861, I'll revise my review. Likewise if it continues to perform well, I'll increase to 5 stars.
